Ryukyu-Bingata is from the Japanese South Island of OKINAWA. It is a traditional technique for making KIMONOS.
I use Bingata techniques to make KataEzome.
Here is the process:
1. I make a hand-cut stencil.
2. I press rice paste through the stencil onto the cloth.
3. I paint three layers of various colors by hand.
4. After a few days, I wash out the rice paste and drip dry the cloth.
There are very many process to make my art. Though I work alone, often in Japanese textile communities people will work together, each person specializing in one part of the traditional process.
It is fun, because each time I use the same stencil but every painting is original. Though it is a huge process to do alone.
I love to make artworks that are my whole vision, love, and energy.
